When you or a loved one are living with coeliac disease, irritable bowel syndrome or any other condition that means that you can’t eat gluten, making the right food choices can seem overwhelming. While supermarkets are starting to stock more and more gluten free options, it can be difficult at first to recognise what you can and cannot eat. Thankfully, there are plenty of foods which are naturally gluten free, so you don’t need to buy alternatives or worry about gluten content when you are preparing meals.
Fresh meat is a great starting point for naturally gluten free food. Fresh beef, chicken, pork, lamb, and more, are safe to eat. However, you may need to carefully check prepared meats such as burgers, sausages and marinated meats. You’ll also need to steer clear of meats cooked in batter or breadcrumbs.
Dairy products tend to be free from gluten, so you are usually safe with things like cheese, milk, plain yoghurt and cream. There are some dairy products that you may need to be careful of, such as flavoured yoghurts, soya milk and some other dairy alternatives.
Fruit & Veg
Being healthy doesn’t need to be hard when you’re eating a gluten free diet. All fresh fruit is gluten free, along with canned, dried and frozen items. This makes snack time a lot easier when you know that you can just pick up an apple, some carrot sticks or a few grapes. However, you may need to be careful if you want to try out some pre-made fruit and veg items such as cauliflower cheese or stuffed mushrooms.
A gluten free diet doesn’t have to completely disrupt your lifestyle. Instead, you can continue to enjoy the things you did before, including alcoholic drinks. While there are some drinks you will need to cut out of your diet, such as ales, beers, lagers and stouts, you can still enjoy naturally gluten free drinks such as cider, liqueurs, spirits and wine.
A gluten free diet can often seem as though it’s restrictive when it comes to sweet treats. While there are a number of things you cannot eat, there are plenty more that you can! Try out treats such as homemade popcorn and jelly, and there are plenty of brands that offer chocolates and sweets which are gluten free. Below is just a small selection from the top brands:
- Cadbury Dairy Milk Buttons
- Haribo Starmix
- Kinder Surprise Eggs
- Galaxy Minstrels
- Milky Way Magic Stars
- After Eight Dark Chocolate Mints
- Rowntrees Randoms
